Aspiring Filipino—American singer Malaya Watson got the boot from “American Idol Season XIII” the week that she performed Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire.”
Malaya earlier made a splash on the reality singing tilt, but landed in the bottom three a little too frequently in the recent weeks. What are some struggles that you had to face as a contestant on “American Idol”? Probably managing time for school and working on my music, and trying to balance my time evenly. Fil-Am booted from ‘Idol’: I’ll be big one day

Malaya Watson Screengrab from American Idol’s YouTube account

MANILA, APRIL 28, 2014 (INQUIRER) Aspiring Filipino—American singer Malaya Watson got the boot from “American Idol Season XIII” the week that she performed Chaka Khan’s “Through the Fire.”

Malaya earlier made a splash on the reality singing tilt, but landed in the bottom three a little too frequently in the recent weeks.

Do you feel like you grew— to a certain measure—in the competition, as a person and as a performer?

In both performing and singing, I think I improved. Honestly, a lot of people think that. I’m really shy, but now I really want to just talk to everybody.

Your dad is a professional guitar player. How much did he influence you?

If he weren’t doing music, I probably wouldn’t have done music, either, because I never would have been around it as much as I have. I was always around music, all the time.

What three things make you unique, in your opinion?

I play the sousaphone. I’m not afraid to be myself. And I can sing.

What are some struggles that you had to face as a contestant on “American Idol”?

Probably managing time for school and working on my music, and trying to balance my time evenly.

All the judges stood up and applauded when you bid goodbye to the show. Were there any final words of encouragement?

Yes. They told me I’d be going far in a couple of years, and that they would probably see my name on [marquees] all over. And Harry Connick Jr. told me to just keep working on my music because I’ll be a big star one day, sometime soon.

What did you miss most from home during your time in Hollywood?

Seeing my friends. So I’m having this big old get-together at my house tomorrow.

Do you have any advice for other teens who are planning to audition next year and/or pursue a music career?

I would say, just focus on school [meanwhile], and just follow what your heart wants you to do. Because if I didn’t do this, I probably wouldn’t be here. I was really hesitant at first. But, if you really want to do something, do it while you have the chance. Because there’s going to be that one important time when you’re going to want to do something, and if you don’t do it, you’ll regret it.

When it comes to dating, what qualities do you look for in someone? Is it important that they play music?

Anyone I date [has] to play football. They have to be taller than me in heels. And they can’t be stupid, because you know what it’s like, the myth, all football players are dumb. They have to be loyal and honest, too… and oh, yes, they have to be busy, because my schedule’s always busy.

Looking back now, what was your favorite performance in the show and why?

Honestly, I have no favorites. I think back and I see that they’re all amazing because I took the time to just put myself into the song and just do my thing.

Did you ever, at any point, entertain the idea of trying something a little younger or more current?

[I thought of it]… I do like John Legend, of course he’s amazing. I like Michael Buble, Bruno Mars and Pharrell. I like a lot of male singers, though I don’t know why. I like Tamar Braxton, she’s good, too.

If you could choose anybody, who would you love to sing with at some point?

Probably… Fantasia! Oh my gosh. If I could sing with Fantasia, that would just be amazing.

(“American Idol” airs live Thursdays and Fridays, 6 p.m., on Star World and ETC.)

Zsa Zsa Padilla and boyfriend Conrad Onglao: Dream come true for Zsa Zsa?

Even if his romance with Zsa Zsa Padilla is now public knowledge, A-List architect Conrad Onglao hasn’t gotten used to being in the showbiz spotlight. “I’m not used to it,” he told Funfare Update who assured him that he would be in due time. He was embarrassed being described as a “lady killer” since he has been linked to several beautiful women including two former Bb. Pilipinas, the ex-actress-singer-wife of a popular singer, et al. Okay then, just tag him The Ladies’ Choice.

According to a Funfare Update DPA, Zsa Zsa and Conrad are leaving for the States in October and the big guess is that they might spring a surprise by getting married there. If ever, it would be a dream come true for Zsa Zsa who almost got married to Dolphy in Las Vegas a few years ago. Hampered by legal kinks, Zsa Zsa’s dream got derailed until Dolphy died in July 2012. No such problem with Conrad whose first (and only) marriage (to his fellow UST Architecture graduate and college girlfriend Ivy Almario) was annulled.

Zsa Zsa’s parents (dad is Carlos Padilla Jr.) are based in Las Vegas and she cooks for them every time she visits. That’s what Zsa Zsa and Conrad have, among other things, in common — love for cooking.

Zsa Zsa’s daughter Karylle was wedded to SpongeCola front man Yael Yuzon last March. You don’t think that, if and when Zsa Zsa and Conrad do tie the knot in the US, the sukob-ng-taon superstition won’t apply to them, do you?

MANILA (2nd UPDATE) - Fugitive businessman Cedric Lee and Simeon Raz, two of the 7 accused in the controversial mauling of actor Vhong Navarro, were arrested on Saturday morning in Eastern Samar.

Justice Secretary Leila de Lima said the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), with support from the local Philippine National Police (PNP) and the Intelligence Service of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (ISAFP), arrested the two at 11:15 a.m. in a remote area in the town of Oras.

"For the past few days, talaga namang tina track down na ng NBI yung kanilang mga location. More or less as of yesterday, we knew the general area kasi parang naging mobile sila. They hopped from area to another--from Quezon to Bicol, to Sorsogon and then finally sa Eastern Samar," she said.

De Lima said that the two earlier eluded arrest but were finally cornered on Saturday morning.

"Initially, parang nakapuslit pa pero tinugis kaya na-corner sila," she said.

She said she instructed the arresting team to immediately bring the two back to Manila.

"Dadalin sila sa Manila, sa NBI. In the meantime, doon muna sila sa NBI detention facility and we will await the commitment order from the RTC [Regional Trial Court] Taguig. Ang RTC Taguig ang magdedesisyon kung saan talaga sila dapat ilagay pending the arraignment, pending the trial of the case," she said.

The local PNP and ISAFP helped the NBI locate Lee and Raz's whereabouts.

Meanwhile, Navarro's legal counsel Atty. Alma Mallonga, in a statement, expressed hope that the other accused will be caught the soonest possible time.

Mallonga also said that the case can now move forward with the arrest of Lee and Raz.

"Hudyat ito para masimulan na ang paglilitis at mabigyan ng katarungan ang sinapit ni [Vhong] Navarro," she said.

Lee was arrested for grave coercion and serious illegal detention, the latter of which is a non-bailable offense, in connection with the January 22 incident that left Navarro with serious injuries.

Arrest warrants for the grave coercion charges were issued last week by the Taguig Metropolitan Trial Court against Lee, his sister Bernice, model Deniece Cornejo, Raz, Jed Fernandez, Jose Paolo Calma, and Ferdinand Guerrero.

Bernice Lee, Cornejo, and Fernandez have since posted P12,000 bail each for grave coercion.

Last Monday, arrest warrants for serious illegal detention were issued by the Taguig Regional Trial Court against the group, with the exception of Bernice and Calma.

Lee cancelled his April 12 flight to Dubai after information about it leaked.

Guerrero attempted to leave for Hong Kong last April 14, but was prevented by immigration officers.

Calma, meanwhile, left the Philippines on April 10, despite a lookout bulletin order mentioning his name. According to Justice Secretary Leila de Lima, confusion over the suspect's name allowed him to leave the country.
