(INQUIRER) A 25-year-old Venezuelan television presenter, Gabriela Isler, on Saturday (early Sunday in Manila) was crowned Miss Universe in Moscow in a glittering ceremony.

Judges, including rock star Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, picked the winner from a total of 86 contestants at the show, watched by millions of viewers around the world.

Miss Philippines, 24-year-old Ariella Arida, was third runner up.

Last year’s winner Olivia Culpo placed a diamond crown on the head of Isler, who wore a silver rhine-stone studded evening dress.

Culpo earlier appeared on stage wearing a white cutaway swimsuit studded with diamonds, rubies and emeralds that the organisers said was worth $1 million.

“That swimsuit travels with an armed security guard 24/7,” commented co-host Thomas Roberts, an American television presenter.

Isler is now set to pose in the same swimsuit on Sunday.

Roberts, who co-hosted the final with ex-Spice Girl Melanie Brown, dedicated the show to the people suffering from Typhoon “Yolanda” (international name: Haiyan) in the Philippines.

“We send our very best, our thoughts. We dedicate tonight’s show to you,” he said.

All 86 contestants initially appeared on stage in red and black cocktail dresses. They then changed into red and black bikinis.

The judges then whittled down the contestants to a final 16, who faced off in a bikini round, carrying white fur stoles.

Then the women were narrowed down to a final 10, who strutted on the stage in elaborate sequinned evening gowns.

Host country Russia was eliminated immediately, prompting boos in the audience.

MANILA, Philippines – Ariella Arida is named third runner-up during the Miss Universe 2013 pageant in Moscow, Russia on Saturday, Nov. 9 (Sunday, Nov, 10 Manila time).

Miss Venezuela, Gabriela Isler, is crowned Miss Universe 2013.

Miss Brazil Jakelyne Oliveira was named fourth runner-up, Miss Ecuador Constanza Baez was second runner-up, while Miss Spain Patricia Yurena Rodriguez is first runner-up.

The 24-year-old Pinay beauty queen competed against 85 other delegates.

During the contest’s question and answer portion, judge Tara Lipinski asked what can be done about the lack of jobs for young people starting with their careers around the world.

“For the people who have lack of jobs, I do believe that we people should invest in education. And that is my primary advocacy, because if every one of us is educated and we‘re well aware of what we are doing, we could land into jobs and could land good careers in the future. So, education is a primary source and it is a ticket for a better future,” she said.

Ariella made it to the top 16 via the online social media voting.

“What's so special about the Philippines is the people. There's always Filipino spirit,” she said in a taped interview aired after the presentation of the competition’s top 10.

Miss Philippines Ariella Arida continues to mesmerize people from all over the world as the Miss Universe coronation night nears.

The Filipina beauty from Laguna awed Russian pop superstar Emin.

“People of the Philippines can be proud because they don’t just have a beautiful girl, but they have a beautiful actress,” the singer said of Arida in an interview by ABS-CBN News’ Dyan Castillejo aired on ANC.

Emin had the chance to work with Arida, who was part of the shoot of one of his singles’ music video.

On Friday (Manila time), the 86 Miss Universe contestants met with Emin for their special number’s rehearsal as part of the prestigious pageant’s finale on Nov. 10 (Nov. 11 in Manila) in the first-time host country Russia.

“The girls are absolutely fantastic. They’re smart, they’re educated, some of them are musicians, they’ve read many books, they’ve seen many movies, they know many languages. So it’s not just about beauty,” Emin said, adding that he is thrilled to have been chosen to perform with the contestants in front of an estimated one billion audience worldwide. Miss Universe 2012 first runner-up Janine Tugonon is also in Russia as the pageant’s online host.

The same ANC interview showed Arida’s message for her countrymen who are currently facing the wrath of super typhoon Yolanda.

“Be strong, and just keep on praying kasi andiyan si God. Mas malaki Siya kaysa sa mga problemang kinakaharap natin ngayon.”
