MORE PINOY FILMS EARN RAVES AT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVALS
MANILA, APRIL 8, 2013 (MANILA BULLETIN) By NR Ramos - Pinoy indie filmmakers continue to shine with works that have earned their places in prestigious film festivals abroad.
The Philippines is strongly represented in this year’s CPH PIX, an annual film festival to be held in Copenhagen, Denmark on April 11 to 24, with no less than three Pinoy films being scheduled for screening namely “Diablo,” “Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay,” and “Thy Womb.”
The three are included in CPH PIX’s Asian Connection film series, which also features selections from China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Taiwan and Indonesia.
Mes de Guzman’s “Diablo” is described in the festival’s website as an “excellent and extremely well-produced drama.”
“Six Degrees of Separation from Lilia Cuntapay” by Antoinette Jadaone, on the other hand, is deemed “touchingly sensitive” as it is “intensely moving” and “extremely relevant.”
The website also heaped praises on Brillante Mendoza for his work on “Thy Womb,” describing the multi-awarded director as “the Philippine film industry’s front-running maverick.”
“Mendoza’s ‘Thy Womb’ once again shows, why he, with his realistic depictions of every day life and plenty of ingenuity, is a name one should keep an eye out for,” it said.
Notably, Mendoza and “Thy Womb” star Nora Aunor won the best director and best actress plum, respectively, at the recently concluded 6th Asia Pacific Screen Awards (APSA).
Meanwhile, three other Filipino films, Dwein Baltazar’s “Mamay Umeng,” and Shireen Seno’s “Big Boy” – both Cinema One Originals entries last year – as well as John Torres’ “Lukas Niño (Lukas The Strange),” will be screened at the yearly Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) to be held April 25 up to May 3 in Jeonju, South Korea.
JIFF, with its goal to lead “A Beautiful Change of the World through Cinema,” was established in 2000. It is hailed as one of the most recognized film festivals in the world focusing on alternative and independent films.
