OCTOBER 3 -That video of an all-female group of dancers brought in to entertain guests at a lawmaker’s birthday celebration has been circulated enough. Simulations of the sex act—dance steps, some call it—have been turned into memes and other means of blasting the yellow-shirted man onstage, the birthday celebrator, and the supposed sponsor of the girls, the chairman of the Metro Manila Development Authority.
Online and off, Filipinos have weighed in on the issue. The anger is nearly universal. This was an event, after all, of a political party that prides itself in treading the straight path. The birthday bash comes right after the inauguration of 80 new members of the administration party, inducted by no less than the Liberal Party’s bet for the 2016 presidential race, former Interior Secretary Manuel Roxas II. When the disturbing images broke traditional and social media, those in the party gave their own explanations of the extent of their participation. The gift-bearer, acknowledged by the master of ceremonies numerous times, denied vehemently that he was the one who asked the girls to provide entertainment. Why, he even asked them to wear skirts!  This is the same Francis Tolentino who spooked motorists who dared take a video of erring traffic enforcers, saying they may be charged of violating the Anti-Wiretapping Act. He wants to be our senator. Birthday boy Rep. Benjamin Agarao said there was no malice in the dance number, because as a real man he found such acts to be the norm. House Deputy Speaker Neptali Gonzales III had the gall to joke about investigating the matter in Congress just so he could watch a reenactment of the performance. Roxas himself hinted he was not to be bothered by the dance number because he was too far removed from the stage to watch it. Some reports say he had left when the dancing started. READ MORE....

A video posted by GMA News reporter Steve Dailisan showed one of the dancers "twerking" against a man in a yellow shirt.

When the dancer lifted her legs, the man tentatively reached for it, then another female in a similar costume said, "Hawakan mo, sir," with the dancer continuing her movement.

In another tweet, Dailisan said the man was among those who were sworn-in at Thursday's event.

Agarao, for his part, said he did not know who brought the dance group to the event, while asking media members not to use footage of the performance.

The representative also likened the event to a bachelor party ritual.

"Parang kasalan, bago ikasal binibigyan ng isang malaking kahon ang lalaki. Kung masagwa iyan, ipapatigil natin dahil hindi tama," he said.

Coloma, meanwhile, defended Tolentino's presence at the event.

"Chairman Tolentino was only one of many guests. He had no say at all on what others who went there would do," Coloma said in a text message.

Coloma added that it was "a private event, not an official function."

Surprise performance

In a phone patch interview with reporters at the House of Representatives, Agarao said it was his friends who brought in the women to perform as a "surprise gift" for him. However, he said he has yet to find out who among his peers was behind the gimmick.

"Wala pong kinalaman si Chairman Tolentino dito at regalo ng mga kaibigan ko ang dance group para sa aking kaarawan. Aalamin ko pa nga [kung sino ang nagdala sa performers]," he said.

Agarao clarified that the performance, which took place in his home, happened after the swearing in of Liberal Party members in Laguna.

"Tapos na ‘yung programa. 'Di naman kasama ‘yun sa program. Parang entertainment lang ‘yun na bigay ng kabarkada ko," he said.

Asked why Tolentino might have been named as the proponent of the performance, Agarao said: "Yung nag-announce, baka may nabanggit lang para mabanggit si Tolentino." —Rose-An Jessica Dioquino with Kathrina Charmaine Alvarez and Xianne Arcangel/JST, GMA News

NOY: No apologies By Sara Susanne D. Fabunan, Joel E. Zurbano | Oct. 04, 2015 at 12:01am

Clueless on ‘stag party’; Online petition vs LP gains ground

PRESIDENT Benigno Aquino III, chairman of the ruling Liberal Party, sees no need to apologize for the “stag party” that LP members had in Laguna on Thursday and infuriated Filipino netizens into starting an online petition on Saturday.

At the same time, a labor organization demanded the resignation of LP officials involved in the stag party where a group of dancers, called Playgirls, performing a racy dance with LP members on stage during the birthday of Laguna Rep. Banjamin Agarao.

The performance was recorded by a “concerned citizen” and posted on Facebook, raising a howl from netizens, who complained that the LP event was a violation of the Magna Carta of Women, or Republic Act No. 9710.

“[But] the President had nothing to do with it. The President had no idea that it was happening,” Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview over a state-owned Radyo ng Bayan.

Although Valte admitted that the performance denigrated and debased women, she said Aquino, even if he is the LP chairman, does not share the perception of some LP members and there was no need for him to apologize for their behavior.

“The President will never condone, nor will he give approval, to any act that would denigrate our women, that would debase them or contribute to such an indignity. We all saw that, whether private event or public event, you know that that is not the perception of the President,” she said.

But a group of netizens started a petition on Change.org demanding that Aquino take responsibility as the head of state and party chairman.

“The entertainment at a Liberal Party oath taking ceremony and attended by government officials presented women as sexual objects,” the petition read.

“Despite Malacañang [through Secretary Herminio ‘Sonny’ Coloma] and MMDA Chief Francis Tolentino’s denial that the women performers were his ‘gift’ to the host, eyewitness accounts from the media who were present proved otherwise,” the petition read.

“According to news reports, there were minors in the audience,” the group added.

“This unfortunate but deplorable incident merits an apology from your office as Head of State and as Chair of the Liberal Party on whose name this event was held,” the organization said.

The group demanded that Secretary Manuel Roxas II, Tolentino and Agarao, who were allegedly present, should be investigated and be “held liable if proven guilty.”

“Government officials, specifically, Secretary Mar Roxas, MMDA Chief Francis Tolentino and Congressman Benjamin Agarao who were present and may have acted either in acquiescence or as purveyors of this deplorable act should be investigated and be held liable if proven guilty,” the group said.

The group said Section 19 of the Magna Carta of Women clearly states that the portrayal of women in a discriminatory, demeaning and/or derogatory manner in advertisements, shows and programs is not allowed. Women should always be portrayed and represented with dignity.

“While the President is chairman of the Liberal Party, I think we should let the part act and they have actually said that they will conduct their own investigation,” Valte said.

Meanwhile, the labor group Public Services Labor Independent Confederation threatened to file a case with the Ombudsman against Tolentino, who earlier announced his intention to run for senator in the 2016 elections, for allegedly violating the Magna Carta of Women.

“Will you vote for a man that will resort to immoral and unethical means to propel his political ambitions? Hopeless!,” the group stated. “And so we reiterate our call, Francis Tolentino, resign! You have no business in MMDA when you are busy campaigning.”

The group said while he is not working in MMDA, Tolentino is attending Liberal Party sorties and induction of local officials.

“How callous and gauche of you, while we taxpayers continue with our mundane tasks of commuting and getting stuck in traffic, you have the liberty of joining birthday parties in your official time as the MMDA chairman.”

PSLink president Annie Geron said many provisions of RA 9710 were violated in the performance of the dance group.

Tolentino has denied any involvement in bringing the group Playgirls to Agarao’s birthday party at the congressman’s home in Sta. Cruz, Laguna.

The birthday celebration was held after the induction of new Liberal Party members and incumbent local officials in the province, which was presided by Roxas.

During the program, the master of ceremony acknowledged Tolentino as the one who sponsored the sexy female group as a “surprise gift” to Agarao.

Tolentino said he was just a guest at the said birthday party and Agarao is a long-time friend.

Despite the call for his resignation, Tolentino said he will submit his resignation “at the right time” and it is up to President Benigno Aquino III if he should remain in his post.

LP DIRTY DANCING SHOW: Bishop demands Aquino apology October 4, 2015 9:37 pm by WILLIAM B. DEPASUPIL AND NELSON S. BADILLA REPORTERS

Liberal Party stag party

A Catholic bishop has demanded an apology from President Benigno Aquino 3rd over the “dirty dancing” incident at the recent birthday party of a congressman from the Liberal Party (LP), which Aquino heads.

Manila Auxiliary Bishop Broderick Pabillo on Sunday said what took place in that party was lewd, showing the dark side of traditional politicians or “trapos” who would do anything to get public attention.

Pabillo stressed that the President, by virtue of “command responsibility” as titular head of the LP, should apologize to the people.

“Because of that, the LP should apologize and [the President] should also apologize as head of the LP,” he said in an interview with the Church-run Radyo Veritas.

The prelate said former Interior Secretary Manuel “Mar” Roxas and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino should also ask for forgiveness from the public since both were present at the party.

“It was done in bad taste. We also demand an apology from former Interior and Local Secretary Mar Roxas and MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino,” the prelate added.

“‘Yun ang pinapakita du’n, na sa halip na itaas ang kanilang dignidad ay mas lalo pang pinabababa ang kanilang dignidad sa pamamagitan ng mga ganitong mga show. At ‘yan pa, sa ating mga lider ng bansa [Instead of boosting their dignity, they degraded themselves because of these shows. And this had to come from the country’s leaders],” Pabillo noted.

Roxas, the LP standard-bearer, presided over the oath-taking of new LP members while Tolentino, one of the LP’s senatorial candidates, allegedly provided the sexy dancers as a birthday gift to Rep. Benjamin Agarao Jr.
The lewd show went viral on social media.

Videos uploaded on Facebook showed three scantily clad women simulating sexual acts with men on stage despite the presence of minors in the audience.

The youth group Partido Manggagawa-Kabataan (PMK) echoed the bishop’s call, saying Tolentino and Agarao should stop their “insincere denials.”

Erika Isaias, PMK spokesman for Cavite, said the best thing that Tolentino and Agarao can do is extend “categorical apologies” to the public.

Agarao had denied that the dancers were a gift to him by Tolentino.

Isaias said Tolentino and Agarao’s “insincere denials are worthless and lame excuses are even worse. We want to hear Tolentino and Agarao declare that the performance was offensive to women.”

The group wants the two politicians to “promise not to [repeat] similar acts in their upcoming political events” after making a public apology.

“Such lewd dances have no place in a political gathering. Trapos frequently talk of family values, women’s rights and child welfare. But their use of sexy or lewd performances as entertainment in political meetings exposes such as lip service if not blatant lies,” the PMK said.

“Women are not objects to be given away as gifts during celebrations. The President has always stood firm against the exploitation of women and will not condone such displays of disrespect,” said deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte, in a text message to Palace reporters.

Despite the public outcry, House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong Rep. Neptali Gonzales II joked that the Playgirls might be invited to a congressional hearing so they could reenact their dance because he had not watched the video.

Turning serious, he said there was no need for Congress to get involved because the dance was performed at a private occasion that coincided with the oathtaking of some local LP officials.

“I cannot interfere with what was happening during the birthday party, on how a birthday celebrant should have run the program of the occasion which is a private gathering, in the same manner that I cannot stop the Speaker if he feels like twerking,” Gonzales said referring to 79-year-old House Speaker Feliciano Belmonte Jr. who celebrated his birthday Friday.

Gonzales also defended the LP, saying its members in Laguna should not be blamed for the incident, but advised Agarao and other candidates to be sensitive in the conduct of their campaigns for the 2016 national elections.

Tolentino said he was just a visitor at the event and did not bring the dancers. The emcee was misinformed, he added.

Roxas, who was at the event earlier, had left when the dancers performed.

A youth group on Friday demanded an apology from the ruling Liberal Party, which is headed by President Benigno Aquino III, for the lewd show at a political event in Laguna.

The Partido Manggagawa-Kabataan, the youth wing of the militant Partido Manggagawa, said the performance was offensive to women.

“We challenge MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino and Laguna Rep. Benjie Agarao to issue categorical apologies. Their insincere denials are worthless and lame excuses are even worse. We want to hear Tolentino and Agarao declare that the performance was offensive to women, say they are sorry for it and promise not to have similar acts in their upcoming political events,” Erika Isaias, PMK spokesperson said.

Senate President Franklin Drilon said Friday he would investigate the “lewd show,” saying the “exploitative gimmickry” was unacceptable to the Liberal Party.

As sworn adherents to the Tuwid na Daan (straight path), LP members are expected to display morally upright behavior, Drilon said.

“Those who fail to prove to the nation that they are good and morally responsible public servants have no place in our ranks,” he added.

But Agarao said “a real man” like him saw nothing lewd in the performance, and that the girls merely danced in public. He added that a lot of congressmen watched similar shows in Metro Manila until dawn.

Tolentino, already widely criticized for his failure to ease traffic in Metro Manila, said it is the President who should decide if he should remain in his post.

PSLINK, the same group that demanded Tolentino resign for his failure to solve the traffic problem, said regardless of who brought the performers, the Liberal Party stalwarts should have stopped the act. With Vito Barcelo and Joel E. Zurbano

That video of an all-female group of dancers brought in to entertain guests at a lawmaker’s birthday celebration has been circulated enough.

The leader of the House of Representatives said he was saddened by the event while the Senate President said he would not tolerate the lewd acts. The Palace issued a statement saying the President does not condone such displays of disrespect of women.

DRILON, BELMONTE

All these are doublespeak. Female entertainers have been a staple in political gatherings for the longest time. Today it’s the Liberal Party; on other days, it could be others. Today it could be the group that says it always treads the path of good governance; tomorrow, it could be others who say they care about the plight of women but are actually amorous toward many.

Then again, what do they care if the image of the party is tarnished? Their reason for donning yellow shorts, or any other color, is convenience. Their loyalty ends when their personal agenda runs in contrast to the wishes of the group.

The political party is just that, a party where strange things happen and everybody utters a copout when things do not go well.

It’s an issue of viewing women as objects, gifts to be given. It’s a question of propriety. It’s a malady of hypocrisy. It’s how base our politics has become. Everybody must have had one drink too many.
