AQUINO TO ATTEND ASIA-EUROPE MEETING IN BRUSSELS IN OCTOBER
MANILA, SEPTEMBER 14, 2010 (STAR) (Xinhua) - President Benigno S. Aquino III said today he will attend the Asia-Europe Meeting ( ASEM) in Belgium next month.
Aquino told reporters in an interview that his attendace on the 8th ASEM Summit on Oct. 5-6 in Brussels could be a chance for him to meet the heads of all the member-countries of European Union as well as of Asia.
"I believe that (ASEM trip) will push through. Personally, what I want to source from them (EU leaders) is the climate change mitigation effort," he said.
Aquino said the Department of Foreign Affairs is arranging his possible side conferences with other leaders.
"I will not agree to go on that trip if there are no clear cut signs that the country will have benefits arising from our visit," he added.
Aquino is scheduled to embark on his first foreign trip to the United States next week to attend the United Nations General Assembly.

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) -- A senior Philippine government official said on Sunday that he will go to Beijing this coming week to participate on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Ministers Responsible for Information Meeting (AMRI) + China.
Presidential Communications Operations Office (PCOO) Secretary Herminio Coloma, in a radio interview, said that his trip to China on September 15 has nothing to do with the August 23 hostage crisis in which eight Hong Kong tourists were killed and several others were wounded.
"I want to clarify, there is a regular meeting of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information and I am part of it," he said.
But he did not rule out the possibility that the hostage fiasco could also be discussed even if it is not on the agenda.
"There could be some reference on that (hostage crisis) although it is not really part of the agenda," Coloma added.
He said the invitation to participate on the ministerial meeting has long been extended to the Philippines through the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Coloma said his trip will solely be in Beijing as he may not attend anymore the event in Shanghai.
