NAGA CITY , JUNE 24, 2010 (STAR) By Cet Dematera (philstar.com) - The incoming Aquino administration would not tolerate the conduct of the illegal numbers game “jueteng,” Naga City mayor Jesse Robredo said.

Robredo, who is being groomed by President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III to be Interior and Local Government secretary, tagged jueteng as one of the key causes of corruption in the country.

“We abhor jueteng not only that it is illegal, but more so because it develops a culture of mendicancy and corruption among our constituents as well as government officials,² Robredo said, adding that Aquino is an anti-gambling advocate himself.

The Naga mayor, who has held the post for 18 years, even boasted that he himself never tolerated jueteng operations in the city.

Robredo maintained that it is public knowledge that jueteng did not exist in Naga City..

But the illegal numbers game remains unabated in most part of the Bicol region, including Camarines Sur, Sorsogon, Catanduanes and Camarines Norte.
