PALACE: GMA SINCERE IN STEPPING DOWN IN 2010
MANILA, JULY 25, 2007 (STAR) By Marvin Sy - Malacañang said yesterday that there should be no reason to doubt President Arroyo’s commitment to step down in 2010 when her term ends, as stated in her State of the Nation Address the other day.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said that the President was sincere in her message not to get in the way of other presidential aspirants in 2010.
“There should be no doubt that the President will end her term in 2010 but she will do so trying to achieve a solid foundation for her successor to continue to build on,” Bunye said.
Though none would officially admit it, a number of senators are known to be running for President in 2010 when the term of Mrs. Arroyo expires.
The President, in her SONA, stated that she would not let anyone “stand in the way of national interest” and try to block the national vision.
A number of senators have vowed to work with the President in passing her legislative agenda as long as they are assured that she would keep her word and step down in 2010.
“There’s still much to be done but definitely there’s still much to be proud of and be thankful for. So the President will continue to work on pushing the economy and bringing down the benefits of the economic turnaround to the people,” Bunye said.
Bunye noted that the President has received “a deluge” of congratulatory and supportive messages following her SONA, which was dominated by her accomplishments in setting up vital infrastructure and plans to complete even more by the end of her term.
“We are gratified with the warm and positive response to President Arroyo’s SONA, as exemplified in the deluge of congratulatory and supportive messages we have received and monitored in public fora,” he said.
“There is recognition that the economic gains we enjoy today are due to the efforts and hard work of our President. Only those who want her to fail persist in the line that our country is in the doldrums,” he added.
On the question raised by opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson about what the President did with the P1 billion grant from the United States to fight corruption, Bunye said that the administration is committed to fight corruption at all levels of government. – With Jess Diaz, Paolo Romero, Aurea Calica
