INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY STILL SUPPORTS ARROYO ADMIN - DFA
MANILA, June 12, 2005 (STAR) Foreign Affairs Secretary Alberto Romulo reported Friday that the international community is still supporting the Arroyo administration despite allegations that it had cheated in the last national polls.
In a statement, Romulo said that," My recent meetings with members of the Diplomatic Corps in the Philippines strongly indicate the continuing support and recognition by the international community for the administration of Her Excellency, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo."
"The international community closely observed the May 2004 presidential elections and welcomed Mrs. Arroyo as the duly elected president of the Philippines," he added.
On the same vein, he expressed with appreciation the US Embassy’s statement of unequivocal support for the duly elected government of Pres. Arroyo and its desire for stability in the country so that the Filipinos could focus on the challenging tasks ahead.
"I also note that the US government sent more than 100 observers during the May 2004 elections and found that the elections were fair and credible, and that the President was legitimately elected to serve her six-year term," Romulo said.
The DFA chief noted, "Our relations with the United States is strengthened by our two countries’ common affirmation for the ideals of democracy and on building the structures that sustain the freedom that we now enjoy."
He concluded, "The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) remains committed to President Arroyo’s foreign policy of vigorously pursuing mutual cooperation with the country’s partner states for the realization of the Government’s development and ecurity agenda."
