GMA  BACK  FROM  TRIPS  ABROAD  VISITS  TYPHOON-HIT  PROVINCES

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo resumed her working provincial trips Thursday after her foreign trip, this time to visit typhoon-ravaged areas in the province of Camarines Sur and Oriental Mindoro.

In her quick trip here, Pres. Arroyo handed checks worth five million pesos as the national government's initial financial assistance to the municipality of Calabanga and to the province of Camarines Sur.

Calabanga Mayor Evelyn Yu received a check worth two million pesos on behalf of the townís residents who were victims of typhoon Unding .

Camarines Sur Governor Luis Raymond Villafuerte, in his capacity as chairman of the Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council, received a three million peso-check for relief and rehabilitation activities in the province.

The President further directed Yu to allot 25,000 pesos financial assistance for the rebuilding of the homes destroyed by typhoon in the town.

This was on top of the 5,000 pesos shelter assistance that she has given to the initial 10 affected families.

The residents of the coastal sitios of Sabang and Bonot in Barangay Sta. Rosa here also received food packs and fishing nets from Pres. Arroyo and the Department of Agriculture (DA).

The towns of Calabanga and Garchitorena in Camarines Sur were declared as the hardest hit by typhoon Unding.

Earlier, the Chief Executive, accompanied by Villafuerte, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman, and Cabinet Coordinator for Provincial Events (COPE) Secretary Conrado Limcaoco made a 20-minute aerial inspection on the damage wrought by typhoon in the province.

Yu reported that the damage caused by the recent typhoon on agriculture and infrastructures, including school buildings, was estimated at 160 million pesos.

Social welfare regional director Eliseo Copian, on the other hand, reported that some 102,863 families, or 543,774 persons, from 529 barangays in Camarines Sur were affected by Unding.
