KNP: GLORIA DEBASED JUNE 12 CELEBRATION
MANILA, JUNE 14, 2004 (MALAYA) The Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino yesterday said President Arroyo "desecrated" the June 12 Independence Day celebrations by converting it into a partisan political rally.
Arroyo, in her speech at the 106th celebrations last Saturday, said politicians "who are bereft of conscience" were trying to thwart the people's mandate by delaying the canvass in Congress.
The KNP said Arroyo, instead of dwelling on the achievement of national freedom through the sacrifices of heroes and martyrs, "defiled the historic occasion by unjustly berating her political rivals in words worthy of the fish market."
"She could have used the historically sacred moment to appeal to our people for unity, to rise above partisanship and emulate the examples of our heroes and martyrs to build a strong nation, with peace, justice and prosperity for all.
"But apparently she is ... unable to ascend above the level of an ordinary, compulsively ambitious politician to whom political victory at any cost, even at the expense of truth, the nation's fortunes and the public welfare is all that matters."
Fernando Poe Jr.'s allies in Congress have been receiving flak for allegedly resorting to dilatory tactics to delay the canvass. The joint canvass committee convened only last June 4 because of debates on the rules of canvass, the same ones used during the 1992 and 1998 polls.
Mike Romero, KNP spokesman, said "it is those politicians who have cheated massively in the elections who are without conscience."
The KNP has been saying the Arroyo administration, through massive and systematic cheating, cheated Poe of victory.
Romero said the opposition members in Congress and "other civil society sectors" cannot be accused of excessive politics just for demanding that the truth come out in the canvass.
Romero added it is the Arroyo administration that is guilty of "excessive politics and divisions by preventing the opposition from exercising its right and duty to expose electoral fraud and by muzzling the opposition's efforts to exercise the freedom of speech."
