By Evelyn Macairan - Senate President Franklin Drilon predicted yesterday that President Arroyo’s lead over her main rival, movie star Fernando Poe Jr. of the Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP), would widen to five to 10 percent come election day.

Drilon told journalists the President would continue to lead the surveys in the coming weeks. He also predicted she would win the May 10 presidential race because of the administration’s efficient political machinery.

"The machinery of the administration coalition would start to make it smart. We would expect that the lead of the President would increase over the next few weeks and, by election time, there would be a significant lead of the President over her closest rival," he said.

The rift between Poe and independent presidential candidate Sen. Panfilo Lacson would also reduce the chances of the two opposition presidential bets to win the helm of government.

In the Pulse Asia Inc. survey conducted March 27 to April 4, the President and Poe were locked in a close fight, with Mrs. Arroyo garnering a 34 percent rating while Poe had 31 percent.

In the same survey, Alyansa ng Pag-asa standard-bearer Raul Roco garnered a score of 12 percent, Lacson 10 percent and Bangon Pilipinas Movement’s (BPM) Eddie Villanueva brought up the rear with three percent.
