YOU CAN DO STANDUPPERS WITH ME ANYTIME - PING
DARAGA CITY, ALBAY, April 3, 2004 (STAR) By Jess Diaz - Wanna do a standupper with me? Anytime.
This was presidential hopeful Sen. Panfilo Lacsonís response to questions from journalists seeking comment on what his opposition rival, movie actor Fernando Poe Jr., reportedly did to GMA-7 reporter Sandra Aguinaldo in Iloilo on Thursday.
The actor allegedly berated the broadcaster when she wanted to do a live story onstage while a rally was about to begin.
Lacson said he can understand that journalists always want to pursue the best angle in a story or obtain the best video footage in the case of television networks, and he wonít mind how they do their job.
"If you want, you can do standuppers with me anytime. Pati nga yung mga taga-print, puede ring mag-standupper sa akin," he said in jest. He knew very well that print journalists do not do standuppers.
He said what happened to Aguinaldo "was unfortunate and regrettable, if it really happened."
The former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief pointed out that sometimes, people are already at their witís end because of problems or pressure.
"Pero may kanya-kanya tayong trabahong dapat gawin, kaya kailangan pasensiyahan din," he said, stressing it was important to keep oneís cool.
He said in his case, he rarely got piqued by or angry with journalists.
Before the berating incident, Lacson did not want to comment on anything about Poe, carefully avoiding a resumption of the bitter word war between their camps that erupted when his party boss, Sen. Edgardo Angara, president of the Laban ng Demokratikong Pilipino, dumped him in favor of the movie actor.
Two weeks ago, a few days before a scheduled one-on-one meeting with Poe was scrapped at the last minute by his opposition rivalís camp, he said he was declaring a unilateral ceasefire.
Lacson said a meeting with Poe before the May 10 elections was still possible, but that he was no longer enthusiastic about it.
