'IT'S FPJ ALL THE WAY' IN MUSLIM MINDANAO, SAYS MUSLIM SOLON
MARAWI CITY, March 24, 2004 (STAR) Muslims in Mindanao will vote for Koalisyon ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino (KNP) standard-bearer Fernando Poe Jr. because he can be trusted while President Arroyo had gone back on her word several times, a Muslim congressman said yesterday.
"To us Muslims, word of honor is important. Among us, there is no need for written contracts," said KNP senatorial bet and Rep. Didagen Dilangalen.
He pointed out that Mrs. Arroyo gained the respect and admiration of Muslims when she announced on Dec. 30, 2002 that she would no longer seek a fresh mandate.
But some months prior to the deadline for the filing of certificates of candidacy for those running for national posts, set in early January, Mrs. Arroyo announced she is joining the presidential race supposedly in response to public clamor.
"The effect of her broken vow, as surveys have shown, is that her ratings in Mindanao can never go up precisely because she flip-flops," Dilangalen said.
He said the KNP commissioned a reputable polling firm to conduct a survey which will not be used for propaganda purposes but whose findings will guide the KNP’s campaign strategy.
Conducted early last month, Dilangalen said that survey, which showed Poe — better known by his initials FPJ — leading Mrs. Arroyo by almost ten percentage points. Poe garnered 37.5 percent of votes compared to Mrs. Arroyo’s 28.7 percent. The survey found that the top vote-conversion factor for Poe is "trust in him."
The survey also showed that respondents favored Poe because he was "mabait (kind), helpful especially to the poor, and nakikisama (gets along with people)."
FPJ is less disliked than Mrs. Arroyo, according to the survey, because only 36 percent of respondents can name something they dislike about him, compared to 64 percent who can name something they dislike about the President.
"The most common dislike about (Mrs. Arroyo), according to that survey, is ‘she breaks promises.’ That is true also for the majority of Muslims who dislike (her) because she doesn’t keep her word," Dilangalen said.
He also said that Poe is trusted by 60 percent of respondents while Arroyo is trusted by only 40 percent.
As for the respondents’ trust in the spouses of the two presidential candidates, survey results indicate that Poe’s wife, actress Susan Roces is trusted by 44 percent while First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo is trusted by only 17 percent.
"In Muslim Mindanao, therefore, it’s FPJ all the way," Dilangalen said.
