JAPANESE  MAN  PUNCHES  CEBU  GOVERNOR'S  DAUGHTER

CEBU CITY,  APRIL 9, 2008 (STAR) By Rudy Santos - A 66-year-old Japanese businessman was arrested yesterday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) after he assaulted a daughter of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

In her complaint, Esperanza Cristina Garcia said Isao Tanaka punched her back after he became annoyed because he was unable to get close to the baggage conveyor belt, with so many other passengers wanting to get their luggage.

Exuperio Bajarias Jr. said he saw the whole incident, which occurred shortly after Philippine Airlines flight PR-848 arrived at the NAIA Terminal 2 from Cebu at 11 a.m..

Garcia, a lawyer, went to a hospital to undergo medical examination. Doctors found that she had a swollen spot on her back as a result of the punch.

Garcia told police she was waiting for her luggage at the conveyor belt along with other passengers when she heard a voice from behind, telling her that she should not put her luggage trolley in front of the conveyor belt.

She turned around to see Tanaka complaining, and replied that everyone else had their baggage trolley near the carousel, she added.

Not satisfied with her answer, Tanaka struck Garcia when she turned her back, according to the police report. When she asked Tanaka why he punched her, the Japanese replied, “Then you can just punch me back.”

This prompted Garcia to call the attention of the airport police.

Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan directed the BI law and investigation division to conduct summary deportation proceedings against Tanaka for being an undesirable alien.

He issued a commitment order against Tanaka and had him brought to the BI jail in Bicutan, Taguig City, where he will be confined pending deportation proceedings. – With Edu Punay
