PINAY MURDERED IN SINGAPORE

MANILA, MARCH 17, 2010 (STAR) A 30-year-old Filipina has been found murdered inside an apartment along Bencoolen street.

Police investigators said Roselyn Pascua arrived in Singapore about three weeks ago to visit friends and relatives.

Channel News Asia reported that the building’s caretaker discovered Pascua’s bloodied remains inside her room before dawn yesterday after a neighbor reported hearing suspicious noises.

The victim apparently was renting a unit on the 5th floor and lived alone.

Similar units are being rented out at a daily minimum rate of around S$25.

The police said Pascua had been stabbed repeatedly in the chest and ruled that the incident was a murder case. No further comment was made on the murder weapon, the report said.

Police have issued an alert to taxi drivers to look out for five people they believe can help them in their investigations.

The victim’s body was carried out as curious onlookers and members of the media gathered.

At around 3 a.m. on Monday, police were informed that a woman’s body was discovered inside a unit of Peony Mansion.

The woman had stab wounds on the left side of her chest.

“Upon our arrival, the deceased was spotted lying face-up with injuries near the main door of the unit. Police has classified the case as murder and investigations are currently ongoing,” said Humphrey Sew, media relations officer of the Singapore Police Force.

“A man and a woman... they were speaking a foreign language... It seems to be normal, because we speak loudly too,” said a Peony Mansion resident.

A man who works at a nearby coffee shop said he saw the woman on several occasions.

“I last saw her yesterday evening at around 6 p.m.,” said Ching Fook Wah, a coffee shop stall operator.

A notice on the property states that action will be taken against sex workers who used the premises as a brothel.

ROSELYN Pascua, who came here from the Philippines about three weeks ago to visit relatives and friends, was found stabbed to death early on Monday in a room in Peony Mansion on Bencoolen Street.

A resident in a nearby room heard suspicious sounds coming from the room and alerted the caretaker at about 3am.

Ms Pascua's door was not locked and he saw her bloodied body lying face-up on the floor.

Police were called at 3.20am and found that Ms Pascua had been stabbed several times in the chest. They have classified the case as murder.

Police also issued an alert to taxi drivers to look out for three Filipino women and two Thai men to assist in the investigations.

Police declined to say if the murder weapon was recovered.

Some of the three-bedroom apartments in Peony Mansions have been partitioned into eight rooms each, which are then rented out to budget travellers and Singaporeans from $25 a day

Mr Ching Fok Wah, 58, who was manning the fish soup stall at the coffee shop on the ground floor of the building, said that Ms Pascua was pretty and friendly. 'It's so tragic she died,' he said.
