KRIS, JAMES  JOIN  NOYNOY IN ZAMBO SORTIE / ERAP MOST TV COVERAGE

ZAMBOANGA CITY
, MARCH 11, 2010 (STAR) Actress Kris Aquino-Yap and husband James Yap joined Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III in his campaign yesterday.

Aquino said his sister Kris and brother-in-law James would be of great help in his campaign, and said the support he was getting on the ground would propel him to victory even if his rival, Nacionalista Party standard-bearer Sen. Manuel Villar Jr., seemed to be catching up in the surveys.

He said they would strengthen their campaign with the help of his supporters, such as Kris and James.

“Both have really been helpful. If they see James they ask for Kris, if they see Kris they ask for Baby James. I have Kris and James Sr. here so I guess they will look for Joshua,” he joked.

Aquino said “in the senatorial race (in 2007) where we were in the same slate, it was in Mindanao in particular where I saw people gravitate more to me than to him (Villar) even if he had machinery and money, and even more so today,” he said.

He clarified that when he entered the race, Villar, who used to be the frontrunner, dropped to second place.

“Up to now he’s still in second place. I think the lead has been increasing, seven (points) with Pulse Asia (which) previously said we had a two-point gap. Even with SWS (Social Weather Stations), two percent, with margin of error, it can be argued it is a lead of four points,” he said.

He added they have been working very hard because Villar had been preparing for three years, “while we only have five months.”

“We must be doing something right (because we remain number one). The goal is to increase our lead. Our machinery is based on people. They are volunteers, well motivated, very energetic, and work better than those working on salary. We see glimpses of it every day,” Aquino said.

“We came from Pagadian, where everyone filled the streets to flash the L (for Laban) sign, wave to us and express support. That was the second time we went to Pagadian. I don’t have machinery there. What happened there is typical of places we go to,” Aquino said. – Aurea Calica

Here comes the cavalry, also known as Kris Aquino BY WENDELL VIGILIA

ACTRESS-TV host Kris Aquino for the first time joined the campaign sortie Sen. Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III in Zamboanga City, a day after a Social Weather Stations survey showed her brother statistically tied with Sen. Manuel Villar of the Nacionalista Party.

"Actually, ka-plastikan kung sasabihin mong di ka worried na lumalapit pero very confident ako na a-angat kami uli," she told reporters.

The survey showed that 36 percent of the 2,100 registered voters polled from Feb. 24 to Feb. 28 were for Aquino while 34 percent rooted for Villar.

Kris said she also took time out of her hectic schedule to visit Zamboanga where Noynoy took a refuge and prayed when the clamor for him to seek the presidency broke out.

"Alam ninyo siguro napakaespesyal ng Zamboanga para sa amin kasi di ba dito nagpunta si Noy para magdasal at dito niya nabuo ang kalooban niya para tumakbo para maging presidente," she said.

Kris expressed reservations about living again in Malacañang, saying even her brother would not want them staying there.

"I’m sure ayaw naman ni Noynoy na isama ako, at may sarili akong bahay, ok lang kami. Basta susuportahan namin siya sa lahat ng paraan na kaya namin," she said.

Kris said she would also campaign in Iloilo and Davao, possibly with son Baby James.

The LP downplayed the SWS results.

Party spokesman Sen. Francis Pangilinan said that despite being the first candidate to run in the presidential race "and an unprecedented ad buy of over one billion pesos since November of last year, Sen. Villar continues to fall short of his ultimate objective––that of overtaking Sen. Noynoy."

The LP noted based on figures from AGB Nielsen, Villar has spent over P120 million from Feb. 9 to March 2 on TV advertisements alone.

It said the figure places Villar’s total expenditures on political advertisements from November 1 last year to March 2 this year at over P1.3 billion, "an amount almost equal to the total TV ad expenditures of four of his closest rivals."

Pangilinan said that if spending from November 1 last year would be taken into account, Lakas-Kampi CMD presidential bet Gilberto Teodoro Jr. would be ranking second as he has spent almost half a billion pesos (P472,810,675 million) on TV ads from Nov. 1 to March 2 this year.

"This only proves that our people will not support a leader who has been tainted by corruption or one who is associated with the corrupt. The surveys show that Filipinos want a decent, honest leader they can trust and they see that in Sen. Noy," he said.

Estrada got most TV news coverage among candidates By Dino Balabo (The Philippine Star) Updated March 11, 2010 12:00 AM

MALOLOS CITY, Philippines – Former President Joseph Estrada had the most television news coverage among presidential candidates during the first week of the presidential campaign, a local media watchdog reported.

The Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility (CMFR), in a report released last Monday, said Estrada got the most airtime in news coverage in NBN-4’s Teledyaryo, GMA 7’s 24 Oras, and ABS-CBN’s TV Patrol during the Feb. 9-27 monitoring period.

Estrada, of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP), logged a total of 36.29 minutes airtime, followed by Nacionalista Party’s (NP) Sen. Manuel Villar with 34.51 minutes and administration bet Gilbert Teodoro with 34.36 minutes.

Liberal Party (LP) standard-bearer Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III had 29.34 minutes; Bagumbayan Party’s Sen. Richard Gordon had 17.33 minutes; JC de los Reyes of the Ang Kapatiran Party (AKP) had 14.36 minutes.

Religious leader and Bangon Pilipinas Party standard-bearer Eddie Villanueva got 13.43 minutes; independent candidate Sen. Jamby Madrigal 12.11 minutes; disqualified Kilusang Bagong Lipunan (KBL) standard-bearer Vetellano Acosta 7.36 minutes, and environmentalist Nicanor Perlas, 6.16 minutes.

“As expected, election news coverage was focused on the presidential candidates, with all three news shows devoting most of their election airtime to the activities of the major contenders. GMA’s 24 Oras allotted 17 percent of its total airtime to the presidential race, while TV Patrol had 13 percent and Teledyaryo allotted six percent of its total airtime,” the CMFR said in its report.

Aside from the coverage of sorties, Estrada was also the subject of special news reports such as GMA’s 24 Oras story on Feb. 16 titled “Erap, tinanggap ang pagso-sorry ni Yasay,” and ABS- CBN’s TV Patrol’s Feb.23 episode “Erap, pinapaatras.”

Villar, on the other hand, was the most-covered presidential candidate of the news program 24 Oras, while Teodoro was almost exclusively covered by NBN-4’s Teledyaryo.

For the vice-presidential race, Sen. Loren Legarda of NP topped television coverage from the same stations with 7.14 minutes of airtime, followed by LP’s vice-presidential candidate Sen. Mar Roxas with 6.12 minutes and Lakas-Kampi-CMD’s Eduardo Manzano with 4.04 minutes.

Bagumbayan’s Bayani Fernando got 4.01 minutes; Bangon Pilipinas’s Perfecto Yasay 3.47 minutes; Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino (PMP) Jejomar Binay 3.21 minutes, KBL’s Jay Sonza 1.31 minutes, and AKP’s Dominador Chipeco, 1.03 minutes.

The CMFR has been monitoring media coverage of Philippine elections since 1992.
