IT'S OFFICIAL: SUMMER IS HERE / METRO SOARS TO 35.8 DEG CELSIUS
MANILA, MARCH 7, 2010 (STAR) By Helen Flores - It’s official: summer is here. The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) yesterday announced that the northeast monsoon season in the country has ended, giving way to the dry season.
“The temperature will rise further in the coming days,” Pagasa deputy administrator and spokesman Nathaniel Cruz told The STAR.
The summer season is expected to peak in April or early May. Temperatures in Metro Manila may reach 37 degrees Celsius while temperatures in Northern Luzon may reach 40 degrees Celsius.
Last Wednesday, Pagasa recorded the hottest temperature in the metropolis so far this year at 35.5 degrees Celsius.
Cruz said the prevailing El Niño phenomenon is causing temperatures to continue rising.
In a statement, Pagasa administrator Prisco Nilo said the prevailing easterly wind brings warm and humid winds from the Pacific Ocean.
“Temperatures all over the country are expected to increase and will peak in April or early May... The easterly wind this year may last for about three months to be followed by the onset of the southwest monsoon in June,” Nilo said.
He said the easterly winds are expected to bring rainshowers over the Bicol region as well as in the eastern parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
Metro soars to 35.8ºC (The Philippine Star) Updated March 07, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services (Pagasa) reported yesterday the hottest temperature of 35.8 degrees Celsius in Metro Manila this month.
Pagasa weather forecaster Aldczar Aurelio said at 3 p.m. yesterday, the temperature went up to 35.8 degrees Celsius, beating the March 2 record of 35.5 degrees Celsius.
The weather bureau predicted that temperatures would continue to climb in the coming days since the summer season has just started.
Aurelio attributed the hot temperature to the El Nino phenomenon.
In Baguio, the coldest place in the country, the temperature went up from 13 to 26 degrees Celsius. In Tuguegarao, the weather ranged from 17 to 37 degrees Celsius yesterday.
Based on the 5 p.m. 24-hour public weather forecast, the country would continue to experience high-pressure area, extending across Luzon and the Visayas, Pagasa said.
Except for isolated rain showers and thunderstorms over the eastern sections of the Visayas and Mindanao, the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy weather.
Moderate to strong winds from the east and northeast will prevail over Mindanao.
Pagasa said coastal waters throughout the archipelago would be moderate to rough. - Evelyn Macairan
