By Marianne V. Go  -  The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Department of Education (DepEd) will implement a pilot run of a training program on entrepreneurship for public school teachers in the secondary level in a bid to encourage students to become entrepreneurs.

The DTI and the DepEd recently signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) stressing the importance of entrepreneurship in spurring economic growth and providing employment and livelihood.

According to Trade and Industry Secretary Cesar V. Prusima, "it’s about time we rethink our ways of teaching the young people these days."

He elaborated that "we should not merely settle on teaching them skills to be able to land a job but instead we should also equip them with attitude, values and skills so that they may help create jobs and eventually become their own bosses."

The DTI-DepEd MOA states that the teachers’ training in the areas of work values, attitudes, business planning and management would enable them to teach the students on how to become successful entrepreneurs and eventually prepare them to take over the reins of the country’s economy in the future.

Purisima acknowledged that promoting entrepreneurship takes time, but starting it in school can spell a difference.

"At the end of the day," Purisima said, "the important thing is we have taken steps to make sure that we go beyond rhetotics in promoting entrepreneurship and have taken the lead to take the advocacy at the classroom level."

The DTI, through the Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTCC), will develop the program design for teachers and invite expert resource speaker.

It will also produce and package the training manuals and training materials for the pilot project.

The pilot run of the teachers’ training will be conducted in the National Capital Region (NCR).

Meanwhile, the DepEd will select the participants according to the batch and conduct monitoring suvey of the pilot workshop together with the DTI-PTTC.
