2 HURT IN NAIA BOMB SEMINAR

PASAY CITY, September 12, 2003  (STAR) By Sandy Araneta  - Two members of the Philippine National Police-Aviation Security Group (PNP-ASG) were hurt when an explosive device went off during a bomb-detection seminar for employees at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) complex in Parañaque City yesterday.

PO2 Robert Tuason and SPO4 Anthony Eusebio of the PNP-ASG’s special operations unit sustained injuries in the head and body when the bomb exploded during a demonstation at the 4th floor of the Manila Administration Building at 2:45 p.m. The building is across the road from the NAIA second terminal.

Both men have been declared out of danger.

Four other persons, who were part of the group attending the one-day seminar, also received medical treatment. They were identified as Peñafrancia Francisco, Cecille Cabatid, Janet Apostol and Marjorie Pabatang.

Francisco and Cabatid were hit in the head by part of the ceiling, which fell due to the explosion. The other two had been in a temporary state of shock when attended to by doctors.

Witnesses said the ASG men were showing employees several types of explosives during the briefing inside the audio-visual room when one of the devices suddenly exploded.

Both had been invited as lecturers by MIAA. Some 50 participants attended the seminar.

The seminar was organized by MIAA, intended to help airport personnel familiarize themselves with differet types of explosives and to train them on bomb threat procedures. Three such seminars have been held this year. – With Reuters
