MARIKINA GEARS UP FOR LOCAL, FOREIGN TOURISTS

Marikina City, May 20, 2003 -- Mayor Ma Lourdes C. Fernando said yesterday
preparations are in full swing for the “Wow Marikina” in Intramuros, Manila
next month as part of the Department of Tourism’s (DoT) “Visit Philippines
2003” project.

The 13 regions are slated to present the "exceptionally best" in their
respective areas as a year-long exhibit dubbed as "The Best of the Regions."

"As far as Marikina is concerned, we intend to awe visitors with our
display highlighting, among others, the magical transformation of the city
as one, if not the, cleanest and peaceful city to live in within the
metropolis," Fernando added.

As this developed, "Sining Marikina…Kulay Aral," a project of the city
government and the Saturday Group - made up of young artists - is on.

Millete Lorenzo, city spokesman, said "Sining seeks to explore and enhance
the artistic talent of the out-of-school youths as well as students from
the elementary and high school."

Sining ushers in with a workshop on painting at the Galleria in Kapitan Moy
on Saturday, May 24, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon.

"Wow Marikina" showcases the preview of the Sapatero Festival 2003 - a
tribute to all the shoemakers in the city. Among the highlights of the
festival are the World's Largest Pair of Shoes, a diorama of a shoemaker,
shoe lantern parade, shoe fashion shows, and the craziest and funkiest shoes.

The joint Marikina Council of Fashion, led by Roger Py of Gibi Shoes, and
the Marikina Shoe Caravan will sell affordable but quality leather crafts
like shoes, belts, and hats. (Sel A. Baysa, Bulletin)
