METRO'S FLORES DE MAYOManila, May 9, 2003 -- The public will be treated to a once-a-year parade 
of the loveliest women donned in beautiful gowns on May 11, Sunday during 
the country’s much-awaited Maytime festival, the Flores de Mayo in Manila.

Selected candidates of this year’s Mutya ng Pilipinas and winners of the 
Miss Manila pageant will participate as sagalas in the grandest Flores de 
Mayo organized by the Congregacion del Santisimo Nombre del Niño Jesus 
(CDSNDNJ) in collaboration with the Department of Tourism and Unilever 
Philippines. They will also be vying for the titles: Reyna de las Flores, 
Rosa Mistica and La Flor de Manila.

Ben Farrales, noted fashion czar and the event’s lead organizer said at 
least 24 top fashion designers in the country who belong to the Fashion 
Designers Association of the Philippines (FDAP) will showcase their finest 
Filipiniana creations based on their interpretation of the theme 
“Esmeralda” with emerald as the motif.

The procession will begin at the Rajah Sulayman Park in front of the Malate 
church. Here, the sagalas’ gowns and the designers will be presented to the 
board of judges. The parade will then move on to the southbound lane of 
Roxas Boulevard towards Bonifacio Drive and turn right at the Intramuros’ 
Sta. Lucia Gate and conclude at the San Ignacio Ruins where awarding rites 
will take place.

“It is important that we show our best traditions and warm hospitality. I 
hope that this Flores de Mayo will send a beautiful message to the world 
about the Philippines being a country of beautiful people and places,” said 
Tourism Secretary Gordon who is one of the Hermano Mayors. His wife 
Olongapo Mayor Kate Gordon, Manila Mayor and Mrs. Lito Atienza, Unilever 
Chairman Howard Belton and Mellie Ablaza are also the event’s Hermano and 
Hermana Mayores.

Participating designers are Johnny Abad, John Abul, Michelangelo Afable, 
Arielle Agasang, Ronaldo Arnaldo, Babang del Mundo, Ivan dela Cruz, Edna 
Encarnacion, Francis Calaquian, Jon Espeleta, Ramon Esteban, Gino Fernando, 
Roland Lirio, Glenn Lopez, Edgar Madamba, Dennis Martin, Jontie Martinez, 
Ole Morabe, Gener Gozum, Rholand Roxas, Richard Papa, Lito Perez, Vivo 
Nazareth and Bumbee Ramos.

Meanwhile, reigning beauty queens Mutya ng Pilipinas Mirriam Chui, Miss 
Manila April Tanhueco and Miss Chinatown Grace Lee will wear the gowns of 
guest designers Rene Salud, Eddie Badeo and Edgar Allan.

Among the judges of the event are Edgar San Diego, Dr. Carvie Roque, Chito 
Macapagal, Pia Sacro, DoT Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab, Allan Tengco, 
Danny Dolor, Edu Jarque and Patis Tesoro.

Tickets for the awarding rites with dinner are priced at P400. Those who
