SMB TAKES CHARGE
MANILA, December 6, 2003 (MALAYA) Dorian Peņa and Dondon Hontiveros provided the needed baskets in the stretch last night as San Miguel Beer beat Coca-Cola 86-81 in Game 3 of the Samsung PBA Reinforced Conference at the Araneta Coliseum.
Hardly getting a boost from highly advertised Cedric Ceballos, the Beermen played All-Filipino against the import-less Tigers in the dying minutes, turning to Peņa and Hontiveros who responded big time as San Miguel took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 title series.
Ceballos, a former NBA All-Star selection who flew in just yesterday to replace the injured Kwan Johnson, had only four points in the first period and had very few good looks at the basket with veteran Coke forward Bong Hawkins hounding him.
Coca-Cola trimmed a 13-point deficit to just two, 51-53, and San Miguel coach Jong Uichico was forced to pull the former Laker out and rely on his locals.
Two-time MVP Danny Ildefonso of San Miguel and Coca-Cola import Tee McClary were serving one game suspension for exchanging blows in Game 2 Wednesday.
