PBL: MONTANA PAWNSHOP, WELCOAT PAINTS NOTCH WIN NO. 2
MANILA, NOVEMBER 12, 2003 (STAR) By Joey Villar - Montaña Pawnshop, putting up a tough defense and drawing clutch baskets from Gary David down the stretch, nipped Viva Mineral Water, 70-69, for a second straight win in the PBL Platinum Cup at San Beda’s Placid Sports Center yesterday.
David scored five of his 17 points in the final period, including a lay-up in the closing seconds that decided the outcome of the game.
"Gary played the hero’s role again for us although defense played a big part in this win," said Montaña coach Bong Go.
Welcoat later joined Montaña at the helm with a 71-63 victory over Blu Star. It was a fitting follow-up to the Paint Masters’ 71-60 rout of Sunkist-UST Saturday while dealing the Detergent Kings their first loss after pulling off an 85-80 overtime win over ICTSI-La Salle.
Rookie Arwin Santos, the UAAP Finals MVP, had a respectable debut with 12 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal but was stopped by the efficient Montaña defense at endgame.
After trailing most of the first three quarters, the Jewelers came alive in the fourth quarter when new acquisition Al Magpayo triggered a searing run that gave Montaña a 59-55 lead.
But a 9-4 blitz capped by a tip-in by Santos put Viva back on top, 64-63, before David’s triple and Magpayo’s 20-footer had Montaña surging ahead anew at 68-64.
Viva regained the lead, 69-68, for the last time on a twinner by Santos and a trey by Warren Ybañez before David struck with the game-winner.
