BEERMEN SPRING SURPRISE OM PALS

MANILA, OCTOBER 6, 2003 (MALAYA) Danny Ildefonso's return boosted San Miguel Beer in more ways than one.

This was most apparent as the prized center helped the Beermen spring an 82-75 surprise on Talk N' Text last night in the Samsung PBA Reinforced Conference at the Astrodome.

Ildefonso, who missed four games due to a sprained lower back, made an immediate impact with 13 points, seven coming in the third period when SMB started pulling away.

Kwan Johnson had 23 points and Dorian Peņa 19 points and 12 rebounds to star the most on the offensive end while lending a helping hand in a swarming defensive strategy centered on Damien Cantrell.

Cantrell, the tournament leader in both scoring and rebounding, was held to only 18 points to yield team scoring honors to Asi Taulava, who scraped, clawed and muscled his way to 22.

The win was only the second in eight games for the Beermen. But the boost in morale it offers for the team's future games is immeasurable.
