HONG KONG: RP CAGERS REPEAT OVER MALAYSIANS
HONG KONG, August 29, 2003 (STAR) The Philippines reasserted its supremacy over Malaysia, scoring an 82-67 rout yesterday behind an explosive run in the last two minutes that turned what had been a close contest into a rout in the 12th Super Kung Sheung Heyuan Cup basketball championship before a predominantly Filipino crowd at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium here Wednesday.
With Jean Pingris and Celino Cruz on the offensive end, the Filipinos unleashed a decisive 11-0 run in the final two minutes to secure the win and virtually assure themselves of a spot in Saturday’s crossover semifinal round.
A slam by Pingris from a perfect assist by Cruz sparked the Filipinos’ breakaway much to the delight of hundreds of Filipino OFWs who provided the much-needed support.
Cris Calimag likewise scored four points and Cruz nailed a short jumper and then buried a triple to cap the Filipinos’ explosive windup that put them closer to their second major international crown in as many weeks. The RP team beat Malaysia, 96-81, to rule the SEABA (Southeast Asian Basketball Association) crown in Kuala Lumpur last week.
