PBA: BEERMEN TOY WITH NATIONALS

Astrodome, July 28, 2003 By Nelson Beltran (Star) San Miguel Beer was in no mood to be gracious to a guest last night.

The Beermen buckled down to work early and showed no mercy for the Cebuana Lhuillier RP Team in pulling off a 95-55 rout in the kick-off game of the Samsung PBA Invitational Cup at the Astrodome.

"Kailangang tulungan ang national team. If we donít play to the best of our ability, hindi naming tinulungan ang sarili namin at ang RP team," said San Miguel coach Jong Uichico of the route.

It was a one-sided match which the Beermen turned into a clinic for the RP training squad.

San Miguel, one-time winner of a PBA Invitational in 1982 and second best team in the recent All-Filipino eliminations, imposed its will on the RP training team, leading from start to finish.

For all intents and purposes, the game was over right in the first half with the Beermen posting a 48-25 spread.

And the comebacking Danny Ildefonso and his teammates never let up on their hapless rivals, increasing their leads to 73-34 after the third quarter.

San Miguel outscored the RP training team in all quarters, 14-8, 34-17, 25-9 and 22-21.

Curiously, the Nationals put up a tough challenge against the Beermen in a recent tune-up game, yielding the game by only 11 points.

"We knew that if we donít play hard, delikado kami. Pinahirapan kami niyan sa tune-up," said Uichico.

Ildefonso, the two-time MVP winner who failed to score a single point in the All-Filipino because of a recurring injury, declared heís back by firing a game-high 20 points in the contest. Nic Belasco, Olsen Racela and Benjie Paras combined for 50 points.

Gary David was the lone National to finish in double-figures with 10.
