UAAP: FEU TAMS TEAR ATENEO EAGLES TO PIECES, GRAB LEAD

Araneta Coliseum, July 18, 2003 By Joey Villar (Star)  Far Eastern University unleashed a torrid third quarter run then played steady in the fourth quarter as it turned back defending champion Ateneo, 73-62, yesterday to seize the solo lead in the 66th UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Arwind Santos was the Tamaraws’ source of strength from both ends of the court as he powered the team to the victory that spoiled the return of Eagles coach Joel Banal, who recently steered Talk N Text to the PBA All Filipino Cup crown.

"Arwind played really well for us," said FEU mentor Coy Banal. "But I think the most important thing that happened in this game was we didn’t panic especially in defense."

Earlier, University of Santo Tomas unleashed a barrage of three-pointers in the second half, then flashed steady free throw shooting down the stretch to down National University, 84-77, to tie its victim at 1-1.

After going one-of-11 from behind the three-point arc in the first half, Jemal Vizcarra, Frederick Hubalde and Jinino Manansala had three each in the final two quarters that turned a 33-44 third quarter deficit to a 77-62 lead with 3.25 minutes to go.

Ronnie Cajayon lit a 10-0 blitz to cut UST’s lead to five, 77-72, but Hubalde and Vizcarra went seven-of-10 from the foul line in the final minute to deal the Bulldogs their first loss against a win.
