PBA: CARIASO HITS 5000TH IN TIGER'S WIN

Quezon City, May 19, 2003 (STAR) By Nelson Beltran - For Jeffrey Cariaso, it would be more satisfying achieving a personal milestone on a won ballgame.

Cariaso did get that kind of satisfaction by making himself the 49th player to score 5,000 points or more on a night the Coca-Cola Tigers roared past the Alaska Aces, 90-87, in the Samsung PBA All-Filipino Cup eliminations at the Araneta Coliseum last night.

Cariaso and the Tigers avenged a 77-86 loss to the Aces in their first meeting last March 30 and moved closer to an outright slot in the mid-season Asian Invitationals on their ninth win in 16 games.

"It became more special because we won the game. It would have become meaningless had we lost the game," said Cariaso, who curiously hit the 5,000-point plateau against the Alaska team which picked him No. 6 overall in the 1995 Rookie Draft.

The Fil-Am guard-forward made his it right in the first quarter but still worked hard after that, personally clinching the win with two crucial plays in the closing seconds.

Wynne Arboleda scored on a running jumper off Paolo Mendoza in the last five seconds as FedEx nipped Sta. Lucia, 76-75, to gain automatic entry into the Asian Invitationals. Idle San Miguel also made it to the invitationals on FedEx’s win.
