PHILRACOM PERKS UP ACTION AT 2 RACE TRACKS
Manila, May 16, 2003 - To heighten interest in scheduled races at the two race clubs this summer, the Philippine Racing Commission, in cooperation with the Manila Jockey Club, Inc. and the Philippine Racing Club, Inc. (PRCI), has slated a six-week promotional racefest dubbed as the 3+3 Philracom Summer Racing Festival.
The festival will be held from May 14 to June 22 alternately at the San Lazaro Leisure Park in Carmona, Cavite, and the Sta. Ana Park in Makati City. Additional prizes for winners and placers, as well as cash incentives for top performing jockeys and trainers, will be up for grabs.
"We are launching this summer racefest to liven up horse racing activity during these lean months of racing. Such an incentive program could enhance public patronage of horse races and possibly counteract the seasonal slack in race betting sales," said Philracom chairman Jaime Dilag.
Dilag said all the scheduled class division races throughout the six-week festival will offer additional prize money of P10,000 from the Philracom and a counterpart prize from the host club, divided between the winner and second placers.
All jockeys and trainers will also have their respective division contests in each venue, with the top three performers in each division receiving cash incentives of P15,000, P10,000 and P5,000, respectively.
Dilag launched the festival yesterday at the Casino Espanol in the company of commissioners Vergel Cruz, Eduardo Domingo Jr., Felizardo Sevilla Jr., Rogelio Tandiama, Francis Trillana Jr. and Eduardo Jose, also the concurrent executive director.
Highlighting the festival is the running of the 1st leg of the 2003 Triple Crown Championship Series, the "Eduardo M. Cojuangco Jr. Cup"- on May 25 at the Sta. Ana Park.
The "Cojuangco Cup," being held in honor of Philracom founding chairman Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco, offers a total pot of P1.67 million, with P1 million going to the winner.
