PBA: GINEBRA SMASHES TALK N TEXT

Quezon City, May 12, 2003 -- Ginebra limited Asi Taulava to 16 points and
eight rebounds last night to whip Talk N Text 99-82 and keep alive its
hopes of advancing to the quarterfinals of the Samsung PBA All-Filipino Cup
at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Kings went into the game determined to avenge their 87-90 loss to the
Phone Pals last April 22 and played with murder in their eyes en route to
their fifth win in 16 outings.

Eric Menk and Estong Ballesteros, acquired by Ginebra from Coca-Cola,
poured on the heat early in the match and won with plenty to spare while
handing the Phone Pals their seventh defeat against nine wins.

Menk led all scorers with 30 points and nine rebounds aside from helping
limit the production of Taulava, the first time this conference the
Fil-Tongan failed to finish with a double-double.

"I told the boys that we have to prove we can beat talk 'N Text," said
Ginebra coach Allan Caidic. "Actually parang naging second priority na nga
lang dito 'yung kagustuhan naming makapasok sa quarterfinals kasi parang
iisa 'yung gusto naming patunayan after matalo kami ng Talk N Text dun sa
replay.

"Hopefully this win could carry us through the next round. Sana ito yung
simula para tuluyan kaming makabangon. This is really a morale-boosting win
for us," added Caidic, whose charges need to sweep their remaining games,
including their May 25 showdown with Shell, for the last quarterfinals slot
in Group B.

Back-to-back jumpers by Menk at the start of the final period gave the
Kings their biggest lead at 81-61.

Jimmy Alapag, who topscored for the Phone Pals with 21 points, tried to
spark a comeback in the fourth period as Talk N Text trimmed the deficit to
12 at 76-88, still 3:47 left.

The Kings, however, tightened up on defense, limiting the Phone Pals to two
field goals and a pair of free throws the rest of the way.

Ballesteros, who first suited up for the Kings last March 2, finished with
15 points. Mark Cagu-ioa and Jun Limpot also finished in double figures
with 20 and 16, respectively.
