'READING CORNERS' SPROUT UP IN MAKATI
These are a few lines from the poem recited by Grade 4 student Shiela May Macarayan during the "Jollibee Kids Read" with Sa Aklat Sisikat (SAS) turnover of Reading Corners to Makati public schools that participated in the reading program.
After the completion of the 31-day Read-a-Thon, 20 public elementary schools sponsored by the fastfood giant received SAS Reading Corners each, to be installed in their respective school libraries. The reading corners serve as a reward to partner schools for complying with the requirements of the reading program, like the teachers' training and the Read-a-Thon. They are equipped with reading materials that were meticulously selected by teachers and other book experts.
Makati City administrator Nicanor Santiago, who represented city mayor Jejomar Binay, pointed out that "students without books available to them are having difficulty reading." With the installation of the reading corners, the entire student population of participating schools have the opportunity to enhance their reading habits.
After the program, students excitedly trooped to their newfound haven. Studies show that the fourth grade is the right level for students to be able to pronounce the words they read as well as understand their meaning and recall the message they convey.
True enough, Shiela May and her classmates can eagerly narrate the stories which they read through the reading program.
"We are very proud to see the improvement in our students," remarks Evelyn del Prado, a teacher at the San Jose Elementary School. "Not only do they learn to read but they also imbibe the values that are shown in the stories. They also get to develop their artistic abilities through the activities that are part of the reading program."
