FILIPINOS GEARING UP FOR SAMSUNG 2003 CYBER GAMES

Manila, July 7, 2003 (STAR) Thousands of Filipino cyber athletes and gaming enthusiasts are sharpening their skills and gearing up to earn a spot in the official Philippine team representing the country in the Samsung-sponsored 2003 World Cyber Games to be held in Seoul, South Korea on Oct. 12-18.

Recognized in the gaming community worldwide as the Olympics of computer gaming, the World Cyber Games is the world's first and biggest game culture festival where gamers around the world come together to compete and bring honor to their countries through e-sports.

Held on an annual basis since 2000, the World Cyber Games has led the digital entertainment culture through e-sports and has continued to set the standards in global game competitions while providing comprehensive and fun game-related content to the world.

In the Samsung WCG 2003, about P21 million worth of prizes are at stake. More than 500 cyber athletes from about 55 countries are expected to converge to the South Korean capital.

"Through the games, we hope to develop fair play in the youth and encourage them to find a new world beyond all barriers like language, culture and race," Samsung Electronics Philippines president Sang Youl Eom said.

Eom added that the WCG is more than simple gaming and entertainment but a convergence of digital technologies, sports and culture. Samsung believes deeply in the value that these events could bring to the youth - their competitive spirits fired up, their creative talents are cultivated, and their appreciation and adoption of new and better technologies strengthened.

Games in the PC category for the 2nd Samsung Philippine Cyber Games include Half-Life: Counterstrike; Starcraft: Brood Wars, and Warcraft III. The Philippines is sending a five-man team for Counterstrike, and two each for Starcraft and Warcraft III.

All nine athletes will be recognized as official members of the Philippine "E-Sports" Team by the Philippine Sports Commission. Interested participants may register at www.samsungelectronics.ph. Registrants will be noticed of their game schedule and venue.
