GMA BELIEVES SUPREME COURT WILL WEATHER CRISIS

Manila, June 4, 2003 -- President Gloria Arroyo believes Tuesday that the
Supreme Court will manage to weather the current crisis plaguing the high
tribunal.

Pres. Arroyo said she is confident that the SC will be able to evade the
impeachment complaint filed against them by allies of deposed Pres. Joseph
Estrada.

Pres. Arroyo said, "The Supreme Court will handily surmount this challenge."

She was reacting to the impeachment charge filed by Estrada's allies in
Congress Monday against the SC, especially Chief Justice Hiliario Davide,
Jr., for allegedly playing partisan politics to legalize the popular former
leader's ouster in January 2001.

Ex-Senator Rene Saguisag, who had also acted as Estrada's lawyer until
early this year, filed the impeachment complaint seeking the removal of
Davide and Associate Justices Artemio Panganiban, Josue Bellosillo, Antonio
Carpio, Renato Corona, Reynato Puno, Leonardo Quisumbing and Jose Vitug.

The President pointed out that the legitimacy of her administration had
been confirmed a long time ago and was based on the Constitution.

Likewise, she said, most countries have confimed the legitimacy of her
government while the Filipino public have thrown their support behind her
already.

"The legitimacy of the government has been upheld Constitutionally,
accepted by all nations, and sustained in countless ways by unequivocal
popular support," Pres. Arroyo noted.
