GMA FAVORS SEPTEMBER SCHOOL OPENING

Manila, May 9, 2003 -- President Arroyo prefers to have classes open on
September instead of June.

The President made her preference known yesterday in her weekly television
program The Working President.

"For me, September is the best time to open classes not because of SARS,
but because of our changing seasons," the President said.

The President said a September opening would be better for children,
because they would be spared of the heavy rains that usually start in June.

The Department of Education and the SARS Management Committee had earlier
ruled out the possibility of moving the opening of classes from June 9 to
September.

Education Secretary Edilberto de Jesus said that classes will open as
scheduled on June 9.

He explained that a September school opening was considered only because of
the SARS situation. The suggestion was brushed aside when the local SARS
situation improved.
