QUEZON CITY LIGHTS UP PUBLIC CEMETERIES ON ALL SAINTS' DAY

MANILA, OCTOBER 30, 2003  (STAR) The Quezon City government will launch today the "Sinag ng Barangay" street lighting project to light up public cemeteries during All Saints’ Day.

Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte Jr. said the street lighting project will be implemented to complement the "Oplan Kaluluwa" operations of the national government to ensure the orderly and peaceful observance of All Saints’ Day nationwide.

Earlier this week, the city mayor directed the Department of Public Order and Safety (DPOS) to coordinate with the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) for the full implementation of street lighting projects.

An initial 6,000 lamp posts will be installed in key areas of the city, including public cemeteries in Bagbag, Baesa and Novaliches proper as deterrent to street crimes in the area.

Belmonte instructed Manuel Sabalza, head of the DPOS, to coordinate with the Central Police District (CPD) in the deployment of uniformed security personnel in private and public cemeteries on a 24-hour basis starting tomorrow.

Deployment of additional traffic enforcers in major thoroughfares in the city and roads leading to cemeteries was also ordered to ensure smooth traffic during the long break.

Belmonte also instructed the DPOS to assist police in securing bus terminals starting tomorrow night as people are expected to flock to their provinces tonight after Oct. 31 was declared a non-working holiday for government employees. – Perseus Echeminada
