JESUS M. ELBINIAS: WHY IS IT DIFFICULT FOR OPPOSITION PARTIES TO COALESCE?
MANILA, OCTOBER 1, 2003 (BULLETIN) Jesus M. Elbinias - THERE is no problem for NPC and LDP, both claiming to be opposition parties, to decide who to nominate as their respective or common presidential candidate against the Lakas-CMD standard bearer if they assume now that President Arroyo will run for president in 2004. If these opposition parties are still indecisive on who among the presidential wannabes in their camps should stand up against the Lakas, perhaps some of them may be contemplating to join the Lakas ticket if Gloria finally chooses to run. Otherwise, why is it difficult for them to coalesce?

Indeed, Kris is carrying the burden of placing violence against women as an item in the nation’s political agenda. It would not matter if the feminist movement against violence by husband or lover fails. At least the women here have been awakened by Kris’ public revelation of the alleged physical battery, psychological torture, and sexually transmitted disease that she got from her male lover. What our womenfolk can do now is to lobby Congress for a law deterring such kinds of invasions. The movement must succeed, otherwise Kris won’t be known a heroine but a martyr.

The Senate inquiry into the Argentine firm Industrias Metalurgica Pescarmona SA (IMPSA) contract with our government, may be justified because of former Rep. Mark Jimenez’s alleged attempt to bribe Erap, and bribe to former DoJ Sec. Nani Perez with $2 million, in IMPSA’s behalf. Here the Senate should only be concerned with what law can effectively deter bribery in similar projects. Whether Nani should be indicted is the DoJ’s call. Nani may testify in the Senate under subpoena, but questions on his guilt or innocence are out of order.

About 400 Japanese tourists, comprising all men, ranging from ages 16 to 37, flew to Zhuhai, in Guangdong province, and checked in the Zhuhai International Convention Hotel where about 500 girls served them in a three-day sex orgy. This Japanese affair was held on the anniversary of Japan’s invasion of China. The day in the ‘30s when the Japanese Imperial Forces defeated Chiang Kaishek’s Kuomintang army and occupied China, the headlines in all international papers cried: “Japan rapes China.” Last Sept. 16-18, those headlines came to physical reality.

If Danding Cojuangco runs with Fernando Poe Jr. as his tandem, this means Sen. Loren Legarda has to shop for a party to take her in as its VP candidate. Lately, the media has been plugging Loren as Danding’s vice presidential candidate for the NPC party. Former senator and DepEd secretary Raul Roco may also invite Loren as his vice presidential bet. With or without Loren to pair with Raul, most women voters find in Roco their champion and may support him. That was ante Kris-and-Joey drama. But now, the feminest movement considers Kris their “heroine.”

If other members of Congress and their security men have been issued firearm permits, the party-list lawmakers and their security should likewise be issued the same permits. Let’s hope the recent trend of Bayan Muna (BM) organizers and sympathizers being killed will stop. There is no one to blame but our policemen and soldiers, and ultimately the government, if any of the partylist congressmen and their security, identified with the BM, will meet the same fate. Still, the best compromise to end the killings is for the BM or NPA followers refrain from killing innocent noncombatants.

Sen. Edgardo Angara cautioned interested buyers of government properties before end of the Gloria administration by the 2004 election He warned that legal and business difficulties may arise even after their transactions were consummated and the payments made. He tagged such transactions as “midnight deals.” The supposition here is that disposition of government properties through midnight sales are questionable. But the opposition can insure regularity of the transactions by being present at the bidding unless they are among those warned against.
