NEW PEACE ADVISER NAMED
MANILA, September 26, 2003 (STAR) Malacañang has appointed the head of the government’s anti-poverty commission as the new presidential adviser for the peace process with Muslim and communist rebels.
Teresita Deles replaced Eduardo Ermita, who was appointed defense secretary on Tuesday, President Arroyo said late Wednesday before leaving for a six-day trip to the United States and Europe.
Deles’ primary task, according to the President, is to head the government panel in the scheduled formal talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Malaysia next month.
Deputy Presidential Spokesman Ricardo Saludo said Deles is quite capable of taking on the job left by Ermita since she has long been involved in peace efforts in Mindanao.
Deles is currently the lead convenor of the National Anti-Poverty Commission. It is not yet clear whether she will retain her post at the commission. — Mayen Jaymalin, AP
