TAXIS TO GO TO TOURIST CLASS BY 2004

Metro Manila, July 23, 2003 By Lynda Valencia (BULLETIN) By 2004, all passenger taxis in Metro Manila would be sporting a new look and would be issuing receipts to passengers.

Just recently, the Worry-Free on Wheels Safe “T” project that would require all taxi cabs in Metro Manila to sport big body numbers for easy identification and processing of complaints by passengers was launched at the San Ignacio Plaza, Intramuros.

The launching was attended by Tourism Secretary Richard Gordon and Dante Lantin, chairman of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), DoT Undersecretaries Rolando Reyes and Oscar Palabyab, and Ma. Victoria Jasmin, director of the Office of Tourism Standard.

Gordon explained that all Metro Manila taxicabs would be assigned body number to be painted on the front, sides, back and even inside the cabin.

The assigned numbers will be painted over colorcoded backgrounds corresponding to the place where the taxicab is kept when not on the road.

“All the other body markings will have to go so that passengers need only take note of the body numbers and color background of taxis when reporting them to authorities. Definitely, this will help protect the general public as well as tourists,” Gordon said.

He said the idea behind the project is to ensure the safety of the commuting public and to professionalize taxicab operations in the country.

“The concept worked well in Olongapo City when I implemented it there in the 1980s while serving as city mayor,” Gordon said.

He added, “Through this project, the public can also recommend taxi drivers who have been very professional and courteous and fair in their dealings,” Gordon said.

He also said, “Drivers and operators of taxis, as well as other public utility vehicles (PUVs), have a responsibility to safely bring their passengers to their intended destinations. With this system we are implementing, the days of abusive taxi drivers who choose passengers, charge exorbitant fares and commit all other irregularities, would be finally over.”

On the other hand, Lantin said that by 2004 all passenger taxis would be colored white and would be issuing receipts to passengers. (PNA)
