BUSINESS GROUPS HAPPY OVER NCRPO DRIVE AGAINST CRIME

Metro Manila, July 12, 2003 (MALAYA) Business and civil society leaders expressed satisfaction on the results of the war waged by the NCRPO against all types of crime in Metro Manila after they got a briefing from Deputy Director General Reynaldo Velasco.

Velasco briefed members of the regional Council of Advisors on peace and order made up of a cross section of different organizations the other day. He noted that on top of his command's achievements in the first half of the year were the drastic drop in street crimes and the effective deterrent program against terrorism.

Significant strides were also made in the war against illegal drugs, carnapping, kidnapping and other organized crimes in Metro Manila.

Reacting to the report, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) president Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis, Jr. said, "the general peace and order problem has greatly improved under General Velasco."

"Insulating Metro Manila from terrorist attacks is the first big step to restore the people's sense of safety on the street. But much more can be accomplished if the partnerships entered between the regional police and the different organizations are further pushed by building a citizen-based institution," said Donal Dee, president of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines.
