RP BANS CANADIAN BEEF IMPORTS

Manila, May 27, 2003 The Philippines imposed a temporary ban on Canadian
beef imports starting Monday after confirming an outbreak of mad cow
disease in that country.

The Philippines imports about one-fourth of its beef requirements from Canada.

A similar ban remains on beef imports from Europe and Japan.

Other Asian countries, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan, have banned
Canadian beef imports since Tuesday last week, when Canada reported its
first case of mad cow disease in a decade.

News reports said a cow in Alberta, Canada's top cattle-producing province,
tested positive Friday for what is commonly known as mad cow disease, the
brain-wasting bovine spongiform encephalopathy.

Canadian officials, however, said it was an isolated case of an
eight-year-old cow in Alberta that was slaughtered on Jan. 31.
