POST-WAR IRAQ DEALS FOR U.S.-LINKED RP FIRMS

Makati City, April 25, 2003 -- Filipino contractors with American principals are expected to get a good chance at landing contracts in the next few months in the Iraq reconstruction whose initial costs could run into billion of dollars.

This developed as the government and the private sector have forged a strong alliance to position the country for the opportunities arising from the reconstruction of Iraq following President Gloria Arroyo's issuance of Executive Order No. 194 recently creating the Philippine PublicPrivate Task Force for Iraq reconstruction.

Banding together for this effort are the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), Department of Labor and Employment (DoLE), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, TIDCORP, Philippine Contractors Association (PCA) and Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI).

Seriously looked into are the opportunities for construction workers, other services, and supplies of requirements for Iraq's reconstruction projects.

Under the cooperation, the PCA is the funneling point by which local contractors can get information and properly bid for the requirements of the major contractors.

On the other hand, the PCCI will serve as the main point among businessmen other than contractors to link up for supplies opportunities in Iraq. (By Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat)
