MAUNDY THURSDAY TYPHOON HITTING NORTH LUZON

Quezon City, April 17, 2003 -- Typhoon Amang (international name: Kujira), 
which developed in the vicinity of the Caroline Islands late last week, has 
intensified further and will reach northern Luzon by Thursday afternoon, a 
report from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical 
Services Administration (PAGASA) said Wednesday.

As of 2 p.m. Wednesday, the typhoon was estimated at 1,460 kms southeast of 
Northern Luzon (13.5N, 136.0E) with maximum sustained winds of 165 kph 
near the center and gustiness of up to 200 kph. It is forecast to move west 
northwest at 19 kph.

The eye of the typhoon is estimated at 1,150 kms southeast of northern 
Luzon by Thursday afternoon, 790 kms east southeast of northern Luzon by 
Friday afternoon and at 400 kms east of northern Luzon by Saturday afternoon.

Areas likely to be affected by the typhoon include Cagayan Valley, Bicol 
and Cordillera Administrative Region.
