GMA AIRS HOPE FOR MINDANAO PEACE

Antipolo, Rizal, April 17, 2003 -- President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
expressed hope that Filipino Muslims and Christians will find in their
minds and hearts the will and desire to end the protracted armed conflict
in Mindanao during the Lenten season.

The President made the statement yesterday after emerging from a two-day
private retreat in Antipolo City along with some members of her Cabinet.

"It is a time to contemplate the message of peace and to look into our own
powers of self redemption even amidst the persistent signals of conflict,''
she said, posing an invitation to all Muslims and Christians alike to spend
time this week in deep reflection.

The Chief Executive has been advocating an inter-religious dialogue between
Muslims and Christians in an attempt to provide the religious understanding
to the plight of the Mindanoans.

"I remain hopeful that all Filipinos, Muslims and Christians, will find a
supreme will to end conflict and open the doors for equitable prosperity in
Mindanao," she said.
