SUSPECTED SARS VICTIM DIES IN QC HOSPITAL

Manila, April 15, 2003 Has there been a casualty of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in the country already?

This was the question raised after a 55-year old 'balikbayan' succumbed to the suspected SARS disease after midnight Monday in Quezon City.

The victim was identified as Lourdes Reyes, who died at about 2 a.m. while confined at the Far Eastern University Hospital. Doctors, however, did not confirm nor deny if she was really infected with the virus.

Sources said that Reyes, who has been living in the United States, flew in last Friday into the country after making a short stopover in South Korea via Korean Airlines. Korea is said to be one of the nations in Asia that is currently plagued with SARS.

Sources also told the STAR that Reyes died of "cardio-respiratory failure" due to "bilateral pneumonia".

Confirmed reports showed that Reyes was admitted to the hospital Monday morning due to high fever and difficulty breathing. Doctors said those are two of the symptoms of SARS.

It was also learned that those who attended the patient at the FEU Hospital were quarantined and will be "under observation for at least ten days." Thos who took Reyes out of the hospital after her death were also equipped with protective gear. (Newsflash Philippine Star 04/15 4:14:59 PM )
