HOW DID CORPUZ FALL FOR MAWANAY TALES?

Manila, April 6, 2003 -- Presidential spokesman Ignacio Bunye said the
Intelligence Service of the AFP (ISAFP) should explain why it fell for
Angelo "Ador" Mawanay and how it came across the self-styled police
civilian agent.

Bunye in a radio interview said Malacaņang from the start has been doubtful
of the credibility of Mawanay but it was the ISAFP's call when it placed
him under its custody and protection and even presented his earlier
statements as part of supposed evidence against opposition Sen. Panfilo Lacson.

"Siguro dapat sumagot nito sina (ISAFP Chief Col. Victor) Corpus, dahil
sila ang nag-process nito. The question should be more properly addressed
to them .. Ang attitude nating hindi na siya pinapansin... At least ang
Palace o si First Gentleman (Jose Miguel Arroyo), na kanyang tinutukoy, ay
hindi nakikialam," he said.

He reiterated that the President's husband does not know Mawanay personally
and the only facts he knew about him were the same information that were
released in the media.

Mawanay in a press conference retracted his earlier statements and
allegations against Lacson claiming that he fabricated them after being
pressured by Corpus and NBI Director Reynaldo Wycoco.

He also claimed that Mr. Arroyo even paid him to create and throw dirt at
Lacson which included the alleged presence of several bank accounts abroad.

Bunye said Mawanay's claims reminded him of Pinocchio whose nose grows
longer everytime he tells a lie.

"Wala na tayong masasabi diyan. Talagang mahirap spelling-in itong si Ador.
Natatandaan ko tuloy si Pinocchio. Habang nagsasalita, nagsisinungaling,
humahaba ang ilong. Pag minamasdan natin si Ador parang may bahagi ng
kanyang katawan na humahaba," he said.

He said no one should pay any more attention to Mawanay because "pagka ikaw
ay nagsisinungaling, whatever you say, whether now, tomorrow or sinasabi mo
noon wala nang kredibilidad." (By JOCELYN MONTEMAYOR, Malaya)
