2 KILLED, MAYOR HURT IN MINDANAO BLASTS

Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat, April 6, 2003 -- Two persons were killed and two
others were wounded when an improvised bomb exploded Saturday in front of
an electrical shop here.

Another explosion hit Parang, Maguindanao Saturday, wounding nine people,
including the town's mayor, Vivencio Bataga.

Tacurong police said the bomb exploded in front of an electrical shop owned
by barangay councilwoman Teresita Cabaguing along Burgos st. at around 3:30
p.m.

Killed on the spot was Cabaguing's son, Chris Ian, 26, and daughter, Rose
Eden, 34.

Wounded were former city councilor Alma Vidal and Boyet Cabaguing.

Witnesses said two unidentified men aboard a motorcycle left the bag
containing the bomb near the shop.

City councilor Remus Segura said the suspects pretended to be customers who
brought their motorcycle for repair of its electrical wiring.

After a few minutes, the suspects hurriedly left and left the bag.

"The shop was totally destroyed by the blast," Segura said.

Police held for questioning two suspects whose identities were withheld.

Maj. Julieto Ando, a regional military spokesman, said the attack could
have been politically motivated.

Mayor Bataga said he was on his way to the town hall with two others when a
mortar bomb strapped to a bicycle exploded near them.

"It is good that we have survived this attack. The bomb was probably
detonated from a cellular phone," Bataga told the radio network dzRH in
Manila Saturday night.

"I suspect my political foes as behind the bombing," Bataga said without
elaborating. He said two of the wounded were in critical condition.

In Basilan on Thursday, gunmen killed two people and wounded five others in
separate attacks.

A village chieftain was killed and two of his companion were injured when
gunmen ambushed them in Sumisip town, a known stronghold of Abu Sayyaf rebels.

Col. Bonifacio Ramos, local Army commander, said the attack killed Muda
Jannang of Tikus village and wounded Joly and Ali Janang. The three were on
their way to the municipal hall when gunmen opened fire. They fled after
the attack, he said.

In South Cotabato also on Thursday, one person was killed in an ambush in
Dumadalig village in Tantangan town.
