YANKEES WILL BE SEEN AS INVADERS IN JOLO -- PIMENTEL

Davao City, Feb. 23, 2003 -- Sen. Aquilino Pimentel warned yesterday that the deployment of American troops to Sulu would "provoke hostile feelings among Muslims and aggravate tension in the wake of the brewing war in Iraq."

He said it would also be viewed as an "intrusion into the Moro land because Sulu is the hotbed of Muslim insurgency."

Noting Sulu is the hideout of the Moro National Liberation Front, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and the Abu Sayyaf, Pimentel said "if American troops will be deployed in there, that would be viewed as nothing short of an invasion by foreign troops."

Pimentel also said the presence of US troops would revive historical wounds among the Tausugs, the dominant tribal group in Sulu.

He pointed out that history books have recorded that more than 8,000 Tausugs were killed in fighting American occupation troops in 1913. (Malaya)
