SURVEY: PINOYS PREFER BRAINS TO BEAUTY

Manila, Feb. 14,2 003 -- Four out of every five (81 percent) adult Filipinos are more attracted by a person's brains than by the person's body, according to the Fourth Quarter 2002 Social Weather Stations Survey.

The survey was conducted Nov. 15 to Dec. 2 last year on a sample of 1,200 respondents. It has an error margin of +3 percent and a 95 percent confidence level.

The poll showed the attraction to brains over body holds for 86 percent of Filipino women, and goes as high as 92 percent among single women.

The primary attraction to bodies holds for 24 percent of Filipino men, and is as high as 31 percent among men with a live-in partner.

As to their love life, 58 percent called it very happy, 32 percent said it could be happier, and 10 percent said they have no love life at all.

Sixty-nine percent of married women and 62 percent of married men said they have a very happy love life.

Forty-two percent of single women and 24 percent of single men said they have no love life.

The survey found 54 percent of the respondents choosing health, 35 percent choosing love, and 11 percent choosing money, when asked to choose only one of the three.

The SWS survey questions were patterned after a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll in the United States in 1999.

Attraction to brains is much lower among Americans (48 percent) than among Filipinos. Interestingly, 14 percent of Americans say they are attracted to both brains and bodies, but all Filipinos are able to choose between the two.

One-fifth (21 percent) of Americans, compared to one-third (32 percent) of Filipinos, say their love lives could be happier.

The Fox News/Opinion Dynamics Poll was conducted in the US in January 1999 with a national sample of 911 adult respondents.
