BOMB FOUND AT VIRRA MALL

San Juan, Jan. 28, 2003 - Tension gripped shoppers and store owners at the Virra Mall shopping mall in Greenhills, San Juan after a K-9 sniffing dog discovered a bomb in a trash bin around 3 p.m. yesterday.

Responding policemen immediately secured the mall.

Mayor Jose Victor Ejercito ordered his men to evacuate stall owners and shoppers from the area.

Acting San Juan police chief Supt. Eduardo Lorenzo said elements of the local Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) detonated the bomb.

The bomb was discovered inside a trash bin located in the stock room near the Tokyo Tokyo restaurant.

Lorenzo said the bomb if not discovered could cause a fire when it explodes.

He added the bomb's black powder was of minimal amount.

"But what is worse, it could explode and start a fire because of the gasoline found inside the trash bin," Lorenzo said.

He added they are still in the dark as to who could have planted the bomb. He and his deputy, Chief Insp. Jose Carlos Rayco, were still in the area at press time interviewing shop and stall owners. (Tribune)
