CHURCH SLAMS WOMEN'S RIGHTS BILL
Manila, Jan. 27, 2003 - Representatives Bellaflor Castillo, Krisel Lagman, Darlene Custodio and Loretta Ann Rosales have authored House Bill 4110 that seeks to establish an Integrated National Policy and Program on reproductive health and also recognizes women's reproductive rights, gender equality and ensures universal access to reproductive health, services, information and education.
It also seeks to recognize the basic right of all individuals and couples to decide freely and responsibly the size of their family by spacing and timing the birth of their children.
The bill also states that without regular access to safe and high-quality services, all women and girl-children will become vulnerable to a host of health complications, including death, unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted diseases.
The Catholic Church, pro-life advocates and other concerned individuals have shot down the bill, claiming it intends to legalize abortion. (Malaya)
